"Unpacking economism and remapping the terrain of global health"
How do different practices, structures and philosophies of economic governance configure the global in global health? How do they map the terrain of the global? What do they prioritize as global problems and global solutions? And how does the space of global health (its inclusions, exclusions and underlying implications about global integration) relate to the more general political-economic processes of globalization?
Economism - the core focus of this presentation - offers both obstacles and opportunities for any attempt to answer such questions. In order to move beyond the obstacles of polemic and abstraction that often bedevil use of the term, the presentation unpacks three different types of economism as they relate to global health governance: 1) market fundamentalism; 2) market reform; and 3) market failure.
